Mayonnaise for Your Hair? Benefits, Tips & How to Use It

Okay, here we go. Have you ever heard of using mayonnaise as a hair mask? I’m curious to know if you’ve heard of it – or maybe you’ve even tried it yourself. The idea is to apply mayonnaise to your hair and let it sit as a mask for healthier-looking hair. I know, it probably sounds a little shocking if this is your first time hearing about it. But stay with me…

I know, I know. It sounds a little gross, maybe? But mayonnaise has long been used as an at-home hair treatment with the idea that it can help hair look shinier, softer and healthier. So now I really want to know: would you try it? Is this something you’ve thought about doing, or maybe something you already use as part of your hair routine? Honestly, I say don’t knock it until you try it. And I’m especially curious about whether it actually makes a noticeable difference with continued use.

I’ll be honest, I’ve actually tried this once before, and the results surprised me in a really good way. It was quite a while ago, so I don’t remember every detail, but I do remember being impressed with how my hair looked and felt afterward. It may be time for me to revisit it, do a little more research, and try it again with fresh eyes. I definitely think it’s worth exploring. And if I do give it another try, I’ll come back with an updated take on the experience and whether I notice a difference with continued use. Stay tuned.

Mayonnaise for Your Hair: Benefits & What to Know

I did a little digging to better understand why mayonnaise has been used as an at-home hair treatment. What I’ve found is that there are a few reasons it may be worth trying. Because mayonnaise is made primarily with oil and egg, it can coat the hair and help it feel softer, smoother, and more conditioned. That doesn’t mean it’s a miracle treatment, but for dry or frizzy hair, it may offer a temporary boost in moisture and shine.

Here are a few tips to know before trying it yourself:

Tip #1: Hydration and Conditioning

One of the biggest reasons people use mayonnaise on their hair is for added softness and conditioning. The oils and fats in mayonnaise can help coat dry strands, which may make the hair feel smoother and more manageable after rinsing.

If your hair tends to feel especially dry, focus the treatment mainly on the mid-lengths and ends. Do this rather than applying a heavy amount directly to the scalp. Those areas are usually where dryness and damage are most noticeable.

Tip #2: Reducing Frizz and Adding Shine

Because mayonnaise contains oil, it may also help smooth the outer surface of the hair and temporarily reduce the appearance of frizz. Hair can look shinier when the strands are smoother and better conditioned. This may explain why some people notice a visible difference after using a mayonnaise hair mask.

The results will vary depending on your hair type and condition, so start with a small amount and see how your hair responds. Fine or naturally oily hair may need much less product than thick, curly, or very dry hair.

Tip #3: Does Mayonnaise Really Help Hair Grow?

This is where it’s important to separate a popular beauty claim from what we actually know. Mayonnaise is sometimes promoted as a treatment for hair growth. This is likely because ingredients such as eggs contain proteins and amino acids. However, there’s not strong evidence that applying mayonnaise to the hair or scalp will make hair grow faster.

What it may do is help the hair feel more conditioned and reduce dryness or breakage. When hair is easier to manage and breaks less easily, it can sometimes appear healthier and fuller over time. That is different from actually stimulating new hair growth. So, if you are trying mayonnaise as a hair mask, I would think of it more as a conditioning treatment than a hair-growth treatment.

How to Use a Mayonnaise Hair Mask

If you want to try a mayonnaise hair mask yourself, start with slightly damp hair. Then apply enough to coat the strands without completely overloading them. Concentrate most of the product on dry areas and the ends. Then you can work any remaining product gently through the rest of the hair.

Leave the mask on for about 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Follow with a gentle shampoo to remove any residue and shampoo a second time if needed. Because mayonnaise is rich and oily, you may want to start with a smaller amount the first time. Then you can adjust based on how your hair responds.

My honest take after having tried it myself

After trying this myself in the past, I was genuinely surprised by how soft and conditioned my hair felt afterward. It’s been long enough that I’d actually like to try it again and pay closer attention to the results this time around. Then I can come back and update y’all with more recent results than having only done it once before.

At the end of the day, mayonnaise may not be the most glamorous hair treatment out there. But it’s definitely an interesting one to experiment with if your hair could use a little extra softness and conditioning. As with most beauty routines, the best results usually come from paying attention to how your own hair responds and adjusting from there.
